When life is smooth, we forget what is important, we become wrapped up in worldly things like money, work, health, power, prestige, well-being, relationships, and even church and volunteer work. Suffering forces us to take time out from the usual hustle and bustle of our lives to evaluate our lives in view of eternity, to reprioritize our lives according to God’s will.
